Poltergeist is German, Poltern meaning to rumble or make noise and Geist meaning ghost so the literal translation is "Noisy Ghost"
Poltergeists are so called because they are known for making noise or moving objects within the place they haunt. This can range from small objects and noises which are non-threatening to the more malevolent cases where objects are thrown at people which is taken as a sign that the person is not wanted in the place.
One belief is that a poltergeist exists because the person in question was never given a proper burial. It is believed that to put an end to the poltergeist activities that the body must be given a proper burial or a maker must be placed on the grave.
Some know poltergeist cases are:
* The "Wizard", Livingston, West Virginia (1797).
* The Bell Witch (1817).
* The Haunting of The Fox sisters (1848) - arguably one of the most famous, because it started the Spiritualism movement.
* Hopfgarten near Weimar (1921).
* Eleonore Zugun - The Romanian 'Poltergeist Girl' (1926).
* The Borley Rectory phenomena (1929).
* The Epworth Rectory
